I thought I better start a separate thread on this.
The Story about this car is pretty complex, It won the Safari in 1977 it was its only event and went straight into retirement and into the Ford Heritage Collection. Later ford were sponsored by BA, and needed a publicity car, so they borrowed STW201R, re painted it in BA colours and with a Reg Plate WTW 567S, which was the BA car that won the RAC that year. So STW 201R was in effect stripped of its ID and VIN, even though the car still existed as the second WTW 567S. In 1978 ford made some new cars, but were short of Regs, so they revived STW201R using the VIN plate from the shell in the Ford Collection, this car was used by Hannu in the 1000 lakes, it did one or two more rallies before it was sold over to Dave Sutton and run in Rothmans colours for Malcolm Wilson, except Dave built a brand new car and used the reg from the boreham car. This was then sold to Clew Hughes, then to Colin Short, then sold to a rally school in Wales. Although the original car was still back in the Collection, it had no real ID, Ford lent the car to the BBC for Tif Needell to do a pre RAC show with the car, but he crashed it and it needed a new body shell, so Ford shipped it off to Dave Sutton and he re-shelled it and shipped it back to the Ford Collection . Dave Sutton then bought the damaged bodyshell off the insurance company restored it and brought it to the RS show in Donington and it was purchased by Rodney Preston.
So in short Rodney has the original Bodyshell, the running gear is in another shell in the Ford Collection, the new(dave sutton) STW 201R was in a rally school in wales until very recently, I think Alan Watkin bought it.
This is a story as told by the Guru Graham Robson.

The truth of the matter is both RP and myself have STW escorts ! RP has rebuilt from a shell purchased from DS, mine was the last Rothmans car, ex CS, all genuine running gear ( engine, gearbox, axle, stamped to prove) with chassis plate, purchased from abroad and restored over a four year period.

Tom Geraghty's Escort is an ex works example. It was driven by Bjorn Waaldegard. Im not sure but I think its one of the WTW cars. Tom told me himself some time ago that when he bought the car he didnt bother with the paperwork for it. He ran it on a Waterford reg ending in UKI.

Cheers Brian, I do remember your dad saying he owned it at one stage. From my crap maths, there is still one STW 201R out there missing, I guess now under another reg, and this is the second STW 201R the one that was sold to Dave Sutton in 1980, he built a completely new one in 1981, with no parts taken over from the previous car, which at that stage was pretty battered but where is the previous car..

All nice cars
Aye thats the car that Derek Smith rallied over here since 1990. Phil Collins used it on the Rally of the lakes in 1989 using the OKK reg. Gareth bought it back off Derek and restored it to its former spec .

I remember John Taylor in Galway in 78 with VHK 47S, I read somewhere that during the 79 RAC John suffered incredible back pain that he could not get out of the car during service brakes and as soon as he crossed the finish ramp in 6th place he retired from rallying and Maidstones sold the car the car that evening to a spectator, who put it straight into storage as it was, it still even has the same petrol in it that it finished the rally on. Car was GKR 618V, Funny though GVX 488T was on the same rally with ARI driving, I wonder did he know where GVX 489T was at the time.

Too stop the stories …
I bought STW201R from Colin Short when it was black as Colin used it, the car had head gasket problems due to the Terry Hoyle engine suffered a cracked block. At the time Sam Nelson was Colin’s engine builder..
I restored the car, Kevin Maxted did the shell refurb and to Its orginal Rothmans colours. John Wilcox repaired the block at the same cost as a new block …
I sold the car to Portugal 🇵🇹 where is lives today as seen in recent photos..
I still have a comprehensive file of the car pre my purchase from Colin to when sold and later when certain people where trying to claim the number from DVLA. The strange part in this cars history, I was the 5th known owner in the cars straight line history/ownership to date no one has ever contacted with proof they had bought the car from Portugal ! When Sutton sold off the museum cars damaged shell I reminded him that he has sold STW 201R to Clew Hugh’s … “O yes dear boy I forgot “
