In my experience, Marshals attend an event because they want to be there because they enjoy motorsport, not because they get paid. Part of that enjoyment should include being made to feel welcome and valued both by the organisers and competitors. Motorsport is a hobby, and hobbies cost money.
just a few comments from rally people that i was chating to a rally recently
Something else to bear in mind, is that all Course Car crews should make a point of being polite and thanking marshals for their efforts. I have heard stories of course car crews shouting at marshals, which I personally think is unacceptable. We are all there to help the event run smoothly, and most people don't get paid for it.
Perhaps it is time that marshals united to create a Symbol that can be displayed in the Regs of an event to show that they are Marshal friendly, if events can't recognise the value of Marshals then perhaps they don't deserve any...!
These sort of things are out there, and as mentioned in a couple of posts not always wanted, so clubs need to think of different ways of thanking the Marshals / Radio Op's in other ways, after all Safety / Recovery Crews always get something back.(Hopefully not too controvertial).
At the end of the day we all venture out in all weather all over the country for the love of Rallying and I will continue to do so, with or without rewards.
One thing I have seen and liked was a pack that had information in it like a map of the course contact details of those involved a full competitors list so people could see who and what was out there and also a sticker and a keyring just some ideas.
I think the main thing that marshals want is not money or keyrings or monetary goods, but the feeling that they are appreciated. I think we need to keep marshals in the information loop with full entry lists, stage information, timing information and such like..
Marshals need to have their voices heard; they deserve recognition and support. If not, they will eventually lose heart, and motorsport will lose out all the way.
