FULL CREDIT FOR IMPRESSIVE MANX ENTRY!…

This year’s RBS International Manx Rally (5/6th May) boasts an entry list that sees the best of the UK’s national rally drivers heading for the famous TT Grandstand in Douglas over the first weekend in May.

With seven of the top eight crews using Subaru Imprezas in their bid to lift the coveted trophy, pride of place goes to three-time winners KENNY MCKINSTRY (Banbridge) & co-driver NOEL ORR (Bangor). Having last tasted the champagne in 2004, the Ulstermen will be attempting to become the first to win the rally four times, but know they will have their work cut out if they are to achieve their aim!

Three-times winner of the Circuit of Ireland Rally, DEREK MCGARRITY (Glengormley), is at No.2, followed by former National Champions ROGER DUCKWORTH (Whittlebury)/MARK BROOMFIELD (Blakesley) at No.3 and PAUL BIRD (Penrith)/IAN WINDRESS (Northallerton) at No.4. Current leaders of the Prima Motorsport MSA Asphalt Championship after an outright win on the recent Tour of Cornwall, TONY DAVIES (Aspley Guise)/PATRICK WALSH (Aberystwyth), are next, while MARCUS DODD (Poole)/ANDREW BARGERY (Hove) break the Subaru monopoly with their Hyundai Accent WRC at No.6.

STEVE FLECK (Newbury) & BARRY JOHNSON (Shildon) are both accomplished members of the Subaru Owners’ Club, and the Top 10 is completed by the Ford Focus WRC of 2004 National Champion STEVE PEREZ (Chesterfield) and 1998 Manx Rally winner – and twelve-times National Asphalt Rally Champion – JOHN PRICE (Hereford) in his MG Metro 6R4.

The organisers, Manx Auto Sport Ltd, have also received a late entry from 2002 rally winner MELVYN EVANS (Llanwrda) in his Impreza and, in the interests of safety, he will have to be slotted in somewhere amongst the aforementioned names.

Local interest centres on ROB WATSON (Greeba)/ROB **** (Port Erin) who are running just outside the Top 20 in their Vauxhall Nova ‘kit car’ and, a further ten places down the list, three very experienced Manx drivers – NIGEL CANNELL (Santon - Vauxhall Corsa), STEVE QUINE (Douglas - Vauxhall Astra ‘kit car’) & SHAUN FOX (Braddan - Vauxhall Corsa) – will be keeping a close eye on each other’s stage times!

The RBS International Manx Rally is also a qualifying round of the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Cup which, after two rounds, is led by TONY THOMPSON (Darlington) in his Lancer EVO8. Right behind him – in both the points and the Manx entry – is ANTHONY WILLMINGTON (Godmanstone) who will be hoping to overhaul Thompson as the event progresses.

The first car leaves the start of the RBS International Manx Rally in Port Erin at 7.00pm on Friday 5th May. After completion of the first four special stages – including a 21-miler! – competitors return to the TT Grandstand for an overnight halt. The second leg begins at 8.45am on Saturday morning and, ten stages later, the podium finish and traditional champagne-spraying are back at the Grandstand at 4.30pm in the afternoon.

That is a real shame.

He always says that on the International when the mist comes down you need to live here to know where you are going. The National would have given him ideal preparation on the stages for a good chance of winning in August.

So is he not running Paul Bird's car then?
