Why are we so backward?
Cos we drive Ford Escort MK2's

Why do people bother spending thousands on these old wrecks?

They werent even the best car to start with.
I think the Fiat 131 had moren World Rally WinsMK2's also have a heavy in the bodyshell, and their weight distribution was not the best in their time.

Also do you think MK2's are creating an image that we are all backward in Ireland?

There are still some damgerous old shells around too.

And why do people spend 100,000 euro on an old car that wont win, trying to take all the bad bits of MK2 out with special adjustable suspension, engine etc, trying to make a MK2 not a MK2?

i also think mk2's are over rated the money lads are pumping into them is silly a good manta 400 or proper m3 with a good driver would wipe the floor with any mk2 if you have to spend €70-100k to win class 11-14 then there is something wrong
i also dont think modifieds have a place on international rallies but i wont open that can of worms.

MK2

Sorry but i think they are a really ugly car

Apparantely they only won the Irish Tarmac series twice as they werent a great tarmac car.

Chevettes, Asconas and Mantas cleaned them.

And why does everyone have the "best MK2 in the country"?

Three Cheers for Rallychic Talking total sense...keep it up... and thats what this forum is for- opinion and freedom of speech ! Now on this debate I wish to add my thoughts.... lets help the MSA/MI along and get rid of those scrappers sooner..... Rest of Europe must think we still live in mud - huts ! ... To draw a parallel.... why do we actually now live in brick houses ???... cuz 'mud' is out .... and so are Mk.11 Escorts !! ..... GET WITH THE PROGRAMME AND START LIVING IN THE PRESENT NOT THE PAST :D

Ooh and another thing.... No One from this island ever drove a Mk.11 Flat out .... ! .... You'd have had to go to Scandanavia to see that happen

Yipeeeee I sense a barrage of threatening U2U's :p

The MK II is part of Irish rallying. Go to Germany and it is older Mantas and Asconas, go to Sweden or Finland-Escorts, Volvos, Mantas, Asconas, Volvos- go to France it is old Renaults, go to Italy and it is old Fiat 131's and Lancias-the clubman has to start somewhere. But I am inclined to agree-€100k for an Escort would be in the price region for a good GP A M3 or a well sorted Manta-that M3 was what I wanted when Bernard Begin the Begin won in Corsica. What about a good Rothmans Porsche. Some the Escorts are just sheds-only good for keeping tools in and then some of them are unbelievable. roll:
