023 TILES SOUTHERN 4 CHAMPIONSHIP.

ROUND 1,THE QUALITY HOTELS WEST CORK RALLY. (18/19th March ’06)

The 2006 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship took off with a bang with 102 crews signing up at Round 1, the Quality Hotels West Cork Rally.
As there are still two more rounds where competitors can sign up (The Killarney International Rally of the Lakes and the Circuit of Munster) this augers well for the championship this year, which has been growing year on year since it’s inception.
Testament to the high esteem in which the Championship is held is the amount of northern and overseas competitors who sign up to compete, and this year is no exception, Melvyn Evans, Phil Collins, Nigel Hicklin, Dean Williams, Mark Morgan and have all registered for the 2006 championship and with home based competition from people like last years winner Denis Cronin, Liam McCarthy, Donal O Donovan,George Cullen and Michael Barrable to name a few the stage is set for a battle royal.
The classes will also be hotly contested. Class 4 participants will include James O Sullivan (Evo 9), Kevin Kelleher (Evo9), Mark Morgan (Evo 8), Kieran O Callaghan (Evo 5) Kevin O Donoghue (Evo 9), Tadgh Linehan (Impreza N11), Mark Nangle (Impreza N10), Sebastian Stacpoole (Evo 6) and it is anticipated that Alan Ring will also register in Killarney in his new N12 Impreza.
Class 14 has Phil Collins,Kevin O Donoghue and Conor Cavanagh among others vying for honours, while class 13 brings us a battle between Wesley Patterson, Gwyndaf Evans, Willie McCarthy, Leonard Downey and Alan Treacy.
Sadly last years winners Denis Cronin/Helen O Sullivan, retired their Impreza WRC on Stage 1 this year with prop shaft failure and Liam McCarthy’s Corolla WRC succumbed to engine problems not long after.Melvyn Evans took full advantage of this and took a lead that he was not to relinquish for the remainder of the weekend, despite major attempts from Michael Barrable who took a number of fastest stage times on Sunday before sadly retiring on the final stage.Denis O Donovan held on for a brilliant second place finish in his ageing Celica ST 205 and John Dalton took third.
Thus the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Championship provisional top ten after round one are as follows:
