The long rumoured issues with the Spanish round of the IRC the Asturias rallye look to have come true and it's now out of the series. The prospective replacement is the Canarias rally formerly El Corte Ingles in Gran Canaria. It might not come off yet as it's another island event and traditionally an expensive event for crews however if it does happen get your cheap flights booked as its a cracking event to spectate on!
would el cort ingles keep its own april date or would it get asturias date. cause if its september might try and convince the missus to go for a holiday:laugh:
Now officially confirmed and will be running from 28th April to May 1! Pity I'm off to the Barbados rally a couple of weeks later otherwise I would have been there like a shot to spectate!
If anyone is deliberating going out to watch then get your flights booked! There are some absolutley cracking stages and the local fans really create a great atmosphere. Very easy to get around just dont try driving up the west coast to get to shakedown like we did, as although it's an amazing road you'll feel like you've done the rally getting there! Will also be a "National" event on the back catering for the GT3 and WRC cars etc that compete in the Spanish/Canary Islands championships.
Lot smoother than Cataluyna and a lot more hills! Still should be like water of a ducks back. If the Spanish S2000 cars run in the main field Vallejo in the Fiesta will be the man to be beat though.
Unseeded entry list now available. Hopefully all the volcanic airspace chaos will have subsided by next week. Will be interesting to see how Kris Meeke's new team mate goes.
Hows it that the 3 skodas are seeded ahead of Kris & Paul? Is it based on the results of previous round? Thought maybe cos he's current champ he'd be seeded no.1 like Loeb in WRC.
All top 4 entries have priority B status, normally seeding is done on that basis and the difference is when the B status was awarded, the longer a driver has had it the higher on the list that driver will be. But it's not mandatory, it's up the the organisers to decide who gets seeded where. In this case the seeding reflects the current championship positions.
Think Mchale has now lost his B status but since he had it at one stage it still had some weight with organisers.
The rally week started today with a test session for Kris Meeke, his new team mate Thierry Neuville and Bruno Magalhaes near Valerón on the north of the island. Kris has his Monte Carlo car back and Neuville has the Brazil/Argentina chassis:
Roads look smooth but little margin for error on both sides of the stage:
More video from yesterday's general test, lovely sound from the Porsche GT3's flat six (running in the national GT class), Kopecky's Fabia getting a bit sideways and the Barry/Brady Evo towards the end:
is that gravel spec Meeke 207 in the background????
