Looks like the greedy ****ers around Sligo shot them selves in the foot by tryin to make a quick buck:rolleyes:

Rally Ireland bosses are planning to return to the WRC calendar in 2011, even though there are no guarantees that it will be part of the series, according to Motorsport News.
The rally could move from its 2009 host town of Sligo. Event director John Naylor recently conducted a preliminary route survey in the border area in an effort to find stages that could link up remote service locations.
Naylor is keen to take the rally to a city centre location but insists it would have to continue to be a cross-border event.
Rally Ireland Event Director John Naylor stated to MN:
No city or town has a God-given right to the rally. It could go to Dublin or Belfast or to an area where rallying is already popular.
One of our biggest problems last year was the cost of accommodation in Sligo. I have spoken to several county councils about road closing and areas for service parks and they have all assured me that overcharging won't happen in their area. We need to build the story that Rally Ireland offers value for money.
Naylor admitted that this year's rally ran at a loss of 65,000 euros. He also added that backing from Northern Ireland's Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure was affected by the poor value of sterling. It left a funding shortfall of more than 100,000 euros.

DUBLIN/BELFAST

Great stages in the Wicklow hills and Dublin Mountains, Pheonix park could be used as spectator stage and then out into the strawberry beds-some great back roads there too.

M1 to Belfast will be complete-Cooley mountains and into Co Down.

Sally Gap, Aughavanagh, Hamiltons Folly, Cooley Mountain, Skerries..the list is endless! How good it would be to see those classic names in a WRC shedule? Dublin could easily cope and the M1 makes it possible to have the cross border element, this weekends Acropolis had a longer run out on the Friday to the Itea area than the possibity of coming north from the capital. Three loops in the form of a shamrock, north to Mournes, South to Wicklow area, and how about the midlands getting a bite of the cherry? Sorry Sligo but this was debated earlier, maybe the members that wanted to lynch those of us that said that greed had taken over will have the good grace to comment? Personally still would prefer it in Killarney but this is a step in the right direction.

I agree dublin would be a great base,as said earlier the classic stages they'd have at their doorstep would be great, there's no way it should be brought next or near killarney firstly the stages around are already bein over used secondly killarney could'nt cope with traffic...if its continuing as cross border, agreed Enniskillen would be a good base only problem would be is dealin with that pig ignoreant psni gang!

now now we are all not greedy in sligo but yea the buisness element pulled the **** it a pity to loose it bit you never were going to get it for ever

Killarney!! :D

Keep it out of the Major cities to F'xk. The towns and outlying economies need the money. Anyway its a cross border event so it should stay in those areas sligo, leitrim, fermanagh, derry, donegal, tyrone, monaghan, armagh, down.

No doubt now that Sinclair has his greasy little fingers in it Dublin will make a surprise addition.

Dublin/Belfast cross border-Pheonix park has some great roads with fresh air drops-near the
Furry glen. Also the strawberry beds road from the park out to Leixlip- would make a great stage-along the shores of the Liffey. Sally Gap, across to The Wicklow hills-how long is it since these stages were used.

The truth be told if the article is read right and they are allowed remote services then it could easily be anywhere along a line from Dublin to Galway IF it stays an across border event. And if there is no finance from the north then it will be doubtful it will stay cross border. Then the different regional tourist baords will get an opportunity to bid for the event. And if anyone came to Galway for the Volvo ocean race then they would have seen how a world class sporting event is catered for by the local business's and population, with customer charters in place on price controls and spot checks to make sure no one breaks the rules.
Sligo better fight pretty hard to keep the event and rope in all the friends they can get, as if they lose it, it is purely down to themselves.

I always thought sligo was a poor choice for the rally. It would have been suited to the east coast. The infrasructure on the west coast is atrocious! If the government would get their fingers out and create better links the yes it would be ok.

Also they could use some of the great circuit stages instead of the muck tracks they were using before.

From a rallying point of view, the East coast of Ireland has f**k all but has the best infrastructure in place as well as a more accessible gateway to the North thus enabling a more effective route and a wider range of stages might come into play as well due to the motorway network easing traffic congestion.
