Surprised that I couldn't find a thread for the 2016 event, when I went looking, so I started this one.

Looks like the event has moved away from the Titanic Quarter and will now be based at The Kings Hall.

Seams like a short term base if theres talk of the kings hall complex being redeveloped soon....I wonder could a relocation to the maze be on the cards for future years or will they find somewhere else in Belfast

- on the face of it I think its shaping up to be a great event - seems to be a good buzz with the Irish, British and European championships in town....I was a bit wary of the WRC car rule changes but looks like we might get the best of both worlds and if the R5 cars take off here and in the BRC it might actually give a more level playing field in terms of machinery for younger drivers here to have a crack at both titles - something we've not really seen since the likes of Finley in the Gp A escort days - any championship is only as good as the competition and with the likes of young evans in the DMACK car tackling the BRC, any up and coming driver that could beat him is going to increase their prospects a heck of a lot

Great news for local rally fans as both the Circuit of Ireland and Ulster rallies will enjoy a return to terrestrial TV after the organisers of the MSA British Rally Championship has struck a deal with Channel 4 to cover the seven-round series.

The rally championship, which begins in March, will also be shown on BT Sport as part of a new broadcast package that will ensure that the high octane action reaches as many fans as possible.

I would expect so, as in previous years.
Usually can be ordered about 2 weeks before the event.
keep an eye on the "Spectators" section on the event web-site for details/order nearer the time.

Also, just while I'm on here, talking about the Circuit, you may, or may not, have seen the Press Release last week, giving some more "teaser" info about the stages. The main point of interest in the release was that on the Friday stages (Co. Antrim area), the classic Torr Head and Glendun Stages are being combined into 1 big one of approx. 30 kms.

Just a reminder to possible entrants ..................... Entries close for both Internationals & Nationals on Tuesday (15th. March).

Last year, some entries didn't keep to the correct date, and ended up on the Reserve list, and didn't get in.

National section is over-subscribed - will depend on how many more entries come in for the International section whether or not there will be several disappointed 'national' crews.

Are the BRC R5 guys doing the national or international section?

Are the BRC R5 guys doing the national or international section?

I can't imagine they'd want to be running with the Nationals, definitely not, if you ask me......

Anyway, wasn't the whole idea of this R5 stampede was so that there'd be uniformity from all nations, irrespective of what championship a crew were involved in.

So, based on the "R5 fits all", will this mean that there'll be ERC, BRC and TROA all running alongside each other in the Top 10 or 15???

Neil Dempsey

They have separate regs that's all. It didn't make sense to me alright. ERC has a control tyre also. Should be a fantastic entry list

Cess

Do the Irish Tarmac and BRC entrants have to use the ERC control tyre? I'm asking to satisfy my own curiosity.

I said I wouldn't post here again but just to clear up.

ERC registered drivers get priority seeding. ERC registration costs €3,000. If you don't register for the ERC, you will be seeded behind all priority cars, even ERC juniors, unless you are an FIA priority driver. Have a look at Tommy Doyle's COI seeding last year for example. This will really only impact on day 1 of the rally, day 2 and 3 running order is based on overall classification. It's a tough one on the organisers to pull it all together with 3 different championships but it will still be a fantastic event.

Neil Dempsey
15-03-2016, 14:27
That's a big chunk of budget if you're not doing the championship alright. I can't wait it all the same.

Pre-order on Circuit web-site, either in the "spectators" drop-down, or in the "store" drop-down. (£10 each).

As for the shops, no announcement yet, but, probably, within the 1st couple of days of April. Also, before anyone asks, there will also, no doubt, be a comprehensive list of venues given for buying them when the "over the counter" sales are announced.

Can anyone tell me where Tardree Shakedown is ?

Tardree, as an Ulster Rally (2012) stage, was near Antrim, and Templepatrick, just off M22, Jct. 6.
Sorry, can't be more specific than that as Ulster Rally running of it was 6.4 mls.long. but there are a couple of variations possible to it. But, as a general location, you shouldn't be far off at Jcn. 6.

Released along with the entry list above, some further info re: entries .............................Entry List for International filled to capacity.Entries from 20 different countries.38 of International entries in R5/S2000 classes (very nearly half the total entries).Entry list for National massively over-subscribed.Just over 60 entries allowed.Almost that many again entered. Also, in case anyone is wondering why they're not listed in the first 25 International entries, crews such as the Moffats aren't registered for the ERC, so, by FIA Regulations, they must be seeded behind those crews who are, for the 1st. day anyway. Crews will be re-seeded for the Saturday stages.

As peespeed said the deal has been done with DGM to run the car in the BRC. It would make more sense though if Ttec ran the car. They already have a full score card from the first two rounds as well as having the car fully dialed in as regards suspension and mapping. Only the Cronins can answer that though! Both Breen and Cronin are high on confidence after their few runs this year and it will be a surprise if either of the two won't be setting the pace.

Keith will be using his own car for all Tarmac events - well that the way at the moment , DGM owns the car that Keith was using in Wales and for the BRC but as it's his own car he is using for the Circuit then DGM had the BRC car available and its being rented out to Craig . Even though it will be TTEC runnning Keiths own car DGM also give suppport and Vica Versa and that is the way it will be all year - well they are the only two Rally Prep teams preparing Citroen DS3's so why not .....

Fisher will be keen to impress on local event also.
Pity Barrable isnt out after such a good run last year.

McGarrity only man in a WRC in the event, must be the least WRCs on a event in years!

You really do have to take your hat off to the circuit team for what they have achieved over the last few years, getting the rally back to where it is now. That is a hell of an entry of R5's. My only disappointment is that its not being held over easter as normal, and the extra spectators that brings to the stages. Still, Im really looking forward to it.

As it's still Easter Monday, here's three and a half minutes of memories I put together covering the late Frank Meagher and co-driver, Michael Maher on their way to winning the 1992 Circuit of Ireland. I've included every junction I filmed, from stage 1 "Hamiltons Folly" on Good Friday, through Easter Saturday & Sunday and the final two stages I got on Easter Monday and then back to The Slieve Donard Hotel for the finish ramp.
Rest in Peace Frank

Pre-order on Circuit web-site, either in the "spectators" drop-down, or in the "store" drop-down. (£10 each).

As for the shops, no announcement yet, but, probably, within the 1st couple of days of April. Also, before anyone asks, there will also, no doubt, be a comprehensive list of venues given for buying them when the "over the counter" sales are announced.

Anyone who's Pre-Ordered their programme should have it dropping thro' the postbox anytime now. Some have already arrived.

For anyone wanting to purchase "across the counter", the list of shops is now on the CoI web-site, under "spectators" dropdown.

Anybody know how long after international runners go through stages will national runners pass through?

15 - 20 mins I recall from previous years but would like to think a bit sooner.

More of the usual weather tomorrow. No rain in the morning, roads will likely be damp and verges will be very wet from last few day's rain and the rain this morning, 2nd runs will be mucky, some wind but rain due around 14.30, so SS4 onwards. Temp no more than 6/7c maximum. Should make things interesting

I may be reading RallyScore wrong, but they don't appear to have added in Craig's and Alastair's 1 minute penalties.
By that reckoning Kajetanowicz is in the lead.

I'd accept I might be reading it wrong, but don't think so.

Those penalties may have disappeared again- computers are funny things.
You have to feel sorry , on the first hand for the competitors who have dropped out and secondly for Bobby Willis and his team who assembled a very impressive field to have the fizz gone out of the bottle somewhat, so soon - no disrespect to those still running but there appears to be a pattern setting in and barring mechanical woes a bookie would be slow to take money on any major upset to the current order.

The Folly is world famous for it's jumps! At International Recce there on Wednesday, asking competitors at Time Control Arrival if they knew the Stage, many who said they'd never seen it before also said that they knew about the jumps .................... they're talked about throughout Europe! As well as "the biggie", they'res many, many more throughout the stage....................... basically, you'd be very unlucky to come in at an access point, and find yourself too far away from one or two.If you have a programme, the "biggie" is 200metres before the junction marked Good Spectator Viewing, with an area on high ground at the junction, with excellent viewing of the jump. (There is STRICTLY NO spectator access to the roadside at the jump, for obvious safety reasons!).But, as I said, there are many other smaller, but no less excellent jumps, throughout the stage.

I suppose it is a Friday and most folk were working today, so not maybe the traditional Easter crowds - tomorrow will be more of a test in terms of the numbers out watching.
- but the organisors have to be commended for bringing this event back from the brink when you think of it a few years ago with 40 odd entry's.... great having the live feed on their website and there has been a noticeable improvement in the coverage on mainstream media in the run up to the event with local news featuring it several times this week, the event has had much higher profile than past few years

Cheers that great

Good to visit the big jump once but don't expect too much. Most of the IRC/ERC did very little flying last few years, but maybe one or two go a little mad which makes it just about ok. Nationals who are more familiar with the stage generally go a bit harder. Watching old videos (but they only show the best jumps of course) does tend to heighten expectations. Most crews are too sensible and lift...

Totally agree.
As I think I said on here a couple of years ago, in reply to a similar question, some of the best jumps on the Folly are the "smaller" ones .................. don't look like much, so can catch out those who don't know the stage too well!

However, I must reiterate my comment from before ............. no matter which jump you might go to, there is STRICTLY NO spectators allowed at, or near to the jump/landing area by the roadside. All spectators allowed areas are marked out by tapes, etc. and anyone inside the Prohibited Areas may well cause the Stage to be stopped! It is for your own safety!

Went in 2014, the designated spectator area keeps you well back (which I have no problem with), but it really didn't live up to the expectation!

Am I missing something fairly obvious, but has anyone else compared the times from the National Rally and the International?

Both rallies (National & International) were scheduled to compete over the same stages, so how come the Top 4 in the National are faster than Craig Breen?

Possibly/probably a very simple explanation, but I'm too tired to go looking at this hour now..... any suggestions welcome.... cheers

Nationals didn't get to compete on SS2, and have not been assigned a Scratch time.

Apparently sweeper went off, got stuck, 4 x 4 sent to tow it out, ran out of time or 4 x 4 went off too or blocked stage (several versions of the story. No idea what, if any is true or not).

Yes, have to second that, the live internet broadcast is fantastic , great to watch and get all the info live and seb marshall has been great with all the interviews. It shows that it can be done, and done well, and FREE. Something like that done elsewhere they would probably be slapping a fee on it. Great job everyone involved. :)

Exactly! they could show the WRC a thing or two with their coverage this weekend, very well put together to be all live! - interesting point with the talk of them bidding for a WRC round again...I'd presume the restrictions that would come with such a deal would prevent them doing this sort of live feed again!

Here come the doom and gloom mongers ! Fantastic event, well run and organised, superb free live feed the whole event and some brilliant drives, especially by home drivers. Give credit where its due ffs. 4 championships involved at the end of the day. I think irish rallying should be proud to have put on an event that rivals anything else out there. well done everyone. havent enjoyed or followed so closely a single event so much in a long time. wrc could learn a thing or two!!

Fair play to the organisers of the rally for the online content and today's stages. Unfortunately I think Friday was a waste of time we only had 5 stages not including the street stage. This meant there was almost 4 hours between the last proper stage and the street stage surely if they really wanted a street stage they could have used Portrush or Coleraine and filled the 4 hours with another few stages. That said it was a good event.

I have a load of pics to sort out in the mean time here's one of Josh Moffett on the shakedown stage.

The Silver discovery was pulling cars out of the ditches after a stage was run and being driven by a well know former competitor.

great event and credit due to all involved, one obvious down side was the total lack of common sense shown at Hamiltons Folly. A iconic land mark of Irish rallying was made a total of mess of at the jump itself roads closed to pedestrians (not shown on map) and no particular good reason for same and then people kept miles away from the action at the spectating point. I am 100% behind safety initiatives but common sense must play its part , there was a greater danger from a helicopter over head than any car entering the field at the junction. For what can be promoted as a great venue to spectate from safely is now a non runner as you would need binoculars to view the event.

The Discovery running ahead of the nationals to ensure the stage was clear of broken international cars towed one such car into a field and became stuck and unable to continue through to clear other cars. Unfortunately this led to the loss of the stage.

Likely story, must have been no yard or escape road for miles around, iv never seen a car get towed into a field its usually the opposite

Correct, there wasn't. Having seen the vehicle concerned repeatedly both during and at the end of the event I can be 100% sure it was not crashed and not on its roof. A bad case of Chinese whispers I'm afraid.
