View Full Version : Do the locals have a chance?

Personally don't think so. Assuming no retirements it's a Fabia 123. Breen maybe fastest of the Irish, should be in P4. Any thoughts?

I think your right to a certain degree ! Mikkelsen seems to be in a league of his own ! Although I think Breen has a very good chance of a podium, I reckon he may put it up to Kopecky but it'll be hard to challenge Mikkelsen and Hanninen (that's my opinion)

Pity nobody did the Pickems for the COI

the non locals have to stick the pace of our terrain before they finish...

Noel157

As does everybody. I don't think "our terrain" will be much of a problem.

A win is very difficult but I could see one of the Irish boys splitting the works trio

breen is the faster of the pair that have a chance.

saying that, fisher is much better to watch, a lot more aggresive and tail happy on the corners at SD tonight i saw

Compared to our usual WRC cars and drivers did you get an idea of how the Fabias compared, speed wise?

Graham Curry
05-04-2012, 23:59
Sounded like they were doing twice the pace.

Lot smoother and corner speed was unreal from the works cars in my view.

Partner says she's thinks they brake later and get the power down sooner than the local wrc stuff.

The 3 works Skoda's were unreal quick. Just seemed to lose no time at all in the corners and just precision driving you would expect from professionals.

But as we all know a wee bit of rain and shiny tar and it doesnt matter whether ur professional or not it will be mighty tricky.

I know tonight was just the shakedown but Mikkelsen was super quick but I have a feeling he might push too hard in places and be caught out.

Breens pace in Sweden showed how he's developing as a driver. I'd fancy him for a podium more if he were in the Fiesta though. Still, you only have to look back to last weekend to see how topsy turvy a rally can become!

Wonder if Barrable might be a bit of a dark horse amongst the local challengers?

I think you'd have to favour mikkelson for the win. Out of the local drivers, you're head would have to say Breen is the one most capable of keeping with at least one of the works Fabias. Would love to see Fisher do real well in the circuit though!

If everyone finishes I think it will be very tight between the 3 top Skodas. If this had been 6 months ago I'd have said Hanninen would be favourite, but since Mikkelsen got his first win he has moved up a level. So I think the top 3 will be Mikkelsen, Hanninen, Kopecky, with Fisher and Breen about 1 minute back but close to each other. Breen is currently slightly quicker than Fisher but I think the Fiesta will be the quicker car this weekend.

Jennings will be the top Group N car by at least a minute and will be close to Breen and Fisher overall, possibly ahead of them as Jennings is in brilliant form at the minute.

What about tyres....Breen, Fisher are on pirellis, Barrable is on Dmacks and the works cars are on the Michelins...

Mikkelson for the win with Fisher best of the locals. Breen in the 206 won't be as quick as Breen in a Fiesta.(If Meeke was out he would walk it).

Id say Barrable and Jennings will be good for a battle.Hard to guage Breen this weekend with the new car.Hes not as quick as the skoda men but he's a good finisher. He should be good for the podium sat eve, maybe higher if others hit trouble..As for Fisher, think he will really be trying hard to beat Breen.Id say he will have a few spins on his way to 4th..Just my thoughts:cool:

Wonder how Breen finds the 207 compared to the fiesta? Skodas were super quick last night although most of my viewing was at the start but seen Hanninen & Breen later on in stage & I'd much rather be watching these S2000s compared to the WRCs. Fishers fiesta seemed to be 'choking' every time off the line but that's maybe just the launch control in it... Skodas & 207s were definitely far sharper off the line. If there's more showers of rain like yesterday evening then that could spice things up!

Mikkelsen for the win, Hanninen 2nd & Breen 3rd

I am going to put my neck out here, I think Fisher and Breen will do very well. Nothing to do with Irish Tarmac or knowing the roads. Breen is in a semi works car and Fisher who i think will be faster then Breen has a works car and both will want to prove they have the pace and both will want to be top dog. As for Skoda, they have the car but not exactly the drivers for them with Andreas been the best of what they have so he would be the main threat. As for the German Skoda boys i think Barrable and Jennings and co will have them.

My heart is saying Fisher for a top 3 but my head is telling me breen to finish p4 but the irish roads have been the undoing of many top drivers before so anything could happen

Fisher showed great pace on COI 2 years ago,i think he will get a podium.

Although it's not exactly definitive, the comments of many crews at recce were that the stages had some "problem/awkward" sections, but the Skoda boys all said they were happy with the stages!

They at least "gave the impression" that they were confident of the challenges they presented!

A nice debate to be having on the Circuit of Ireland!

Ali Fisher has always been very sharp and consistent on the stages in and around Armagh, he has competed on them since 2006 in a 206 cup car and a FST car. He has also driven them in torential rain without putting a foot wrong. I know it is a differnt ball game in a S2000 car of which he has little experience. He is the type of driver who takes a bit of time to become familar with a car but he showed in Donegal 2011 that the S2000 suits his style of driving perfectly.

I think Mikkelson and Kopecky will be too strong for both Breen and Fisher so I predict;

1. Mikkelson
2. Kopecky
3. Fisher

Breen seems to have the edge on Ali on gravel but I think Ali will be quicker on Tarmac, espically up here.

I think everyone is dismissing Barrable too quick, from watching the testing video he seems sharper and more focused than ever. Car sounds in top condition as well .

I know Noel I did see that :) He may have been off the boil a bit recently but when he's at himself he's a match for the other 2 . Kopecky may handle mikkelssen also.

Yep,
I think Barrable has more to offer than we've seen. Early stages of Ypres were impressive.

He was badly shown up in Barum & Scotland after Ypres last year. He'll do well to hang onto the coat tails of Fisher & Breen.

Yeah your right there but there may have been something amiss on those rallies. We'll know the full story tomorro evening ( or maybe tonight ) . How did he get on in the Stonethrowers last year ?

Barrable was 25 sec slower that mickelson on shakedown if he keeps looseing time like that he ll be lucky to keep marty mccormick behind him

Maybe Andreas was at 9/10ths and can afford to hit the yoke and Robert was only checkin over the car.. No point binning it in shakedown is there or beating the works skoda on run 1 and wrecking it on run 2!! The real stages will tell all wether it be good or bad!!

Loeb doesn't be quickest on many shakedowns...doesn't stop him picking up an odd WRC title here and there !!

honestly i taught breen would have made more of an attack than to be 40 seconds down after 3 stages

As much to do with the car as anything else. Top 3 are on a higher plane than Breen. That's what he should be aiming for and should get there. It's no different to his pace on other IRC events he's done.
