hi there, im new to this, just joined a few mins ago. basically iv a focus 1.6 that im turning into a wrc replica, but my car has a sunroof that i want welded/filled in because i want to add a roof scoop to finish off the car to make it look like the real deal. does anybody have anybody have any experience of doing this? any tips etc, thanks for any input!
welding in a plate is a risk because it probably will warp your roof skin.. ideally you would put a non sun roof-roof skin on, but that depends on your budget..
Forget about welding a roof skin, it’ll need serious filler afterwards no matter how carefully you weld it. And fillers in the roof is very hard to do so that it’s undetectable. It’ll be much easier to replace the roof skin. I’d imagine you’ll pick one up in a breakers for very little money, get the whole roof, i.e. cut it off at the pillars, then it’s just a matter of drilling the spot welds and prising off the skin.
uh seems like a serious amount of work for a road car, iv seen a GT Starlet that was done by a guy near me, very very good job, he welded in a plate and filled it after works but that was for a track car so im slow doing it to my road car!
Do a google search for Crannagh Auto Restorations and give him a ring. Swears he can put a plate in and you'd never know.
His work seems to be very good too.
i was into Kingdom crash repairs in tralee and they wouldnt do a plate because of the fear of warping. replacing the roof skin would cost well over a grand he said.....
