Aye but the problem was he tended to mangle too many cars with the "Flat out" approach. Quite simply, he had too many DNFs and expensive accidents. Budgets and sponsorship only go so far.

I would say he was single handedly responsible for the huge success of Impreza road car sales worldwide , and if Ford had brought out a four wheel drive turbo version of the Focus it would have also sold like hot cakes.

The Xsara also didnt come in four wheel drive spec , it was a salesman's nightmare as are most of the mid range Citreons , not even Loeb could boost sales of them . All in all i would say the manufacturers were quids in with him as their driver .

subaru & dave richards created the action man image of colin mcrae.

and it turned out to be the best piece of marketing ever done in the world rally championship. Indeed, as a brand building exercise, the mcrae/subaru image is right up there with the beckhams.

even today 12 years after his finest hour, he is STILL the most talked about rally driver. And would be in the top 10 of most recognisable sporting images - the one of him with full opposite lock over a jump in a subary 555. Only footballers, muhammed ali and john macenroe would preceed him.

I pray that subaru/Richards bring him back to the subaru world rally team, and let THE BOSS retire where he started - at the top of the wrc standings in a blue subaru.

Would agree totally but sadly wont happen , money is now the "king" and it doesn't matter how good of a driver you are unless you have a few million behind you , your going nowhere .

If things were right in the WRC every manafacturer would be knocking down young Mikkelsons door for his signature on a contract, but they are happy to watch his father spend his money on him ,and then pray that some of it will come their way .

What does the future hold after Gronholm, Solberg , Loeb retire ????
