View Full Version : Peugeot Sport 6-speed gearbox problem??
Hi there,
I recently had the gearbox rebuilt because it was contineously poping out of 3rd gear, whenever you came off the power. (So come into a corner in 3rd, then ease off the power, then go to put your foot back on the power, only to find it's in neutral.)
Since the rebuild it's still happening...and it seems to happen sometimes in 2nd gear now too.
Seriously annoying!
Has anyone had any experience of this issue? Or is it just one of those things with this particular gear box?
Thanks,
Doug

Have you checked your engine mounts and gear linkages for wear/movement. I know from working on 205s that problems with popping out of gear can and will happen if you have any issue with the linkage or engine mounts. I know of serveral cases where the box was dropped and rebuilt only to find the problem reoccuring and eventually being traced to the mounts or linkage. The 206 and 205 are quite similar in these areas so have a look.
sounds like worn dogs
the wee taper on the dogs keeps them in gear

That's what I thought originally, so i went and got the gearbox rebuilt. I'll check again but im 95% sure the dog rings were changed.
Paul might be correct...There is a very small bit of play in the linkages. Not too sure how this would result in the gearbox poping out of gear though...surely it would just make it harder to get it into gear in the first place?
ps. thanks for comments so far

sounds like you have been ripped of if a guy has charged you to replace dog rings in your box when there is no dog rings in your cup car box sounds like you have been charged for a wash of the casing job
enda1winger 15-11-2010, 13:17 Id second the check all your linkage, i had a very similar problem with my 106, turned out there was a small bit of movement in the lower wishbone, i 2 had got my gearbox rebuilt thinking that was the problem.
So just go round and check all linkages and engine mounts and suspension parts and check for wear,. it only took a small amount to cause enough movement to dislodge the gearstick and pop it out of gear.
Hope you find the problem.
dont think your gearbox is a dog box???
id reckon the problem is with either the linkage or the gearbox mount

i like to think he changed the syncro rings instead of the dog rings cos they' be hard found in a cup box..:D...as said, its probably down to play in the linkage, or the box moving around, engine mounts
Yep - it was the syncro rings that were changed...sorry my mistake.
Thanks to everybody for their comments...i'll have a look into the mechanism and the gearbox mount. Hopefully that'll sort it out :)

Make sure you have a look at all the engine mounts, not just the gearbox mount. The torque resisting mount is a very likely candidate. If there is any movement there the engine and box will swivel every time you accelerate and lift off pulling on the linkage and popping the box out of gear. It's probably particularly bad coming out of junctions as you have the hard cornering forces aswell as the rocking back and fourth.
If I were a betting man thats where I would put my money.

Ya'd wouldn't want to be in a hurry for it back though!!!
David byrne has build up several gearboxes for me and done work for several customers of mine and I know he is fast and top notch at gearbox work, so I would highly reccommend giving him a call, his knowledge and experience is invaluable when comes to gearboxes,

Same thing happened mr in two different pugs. I fitted the engine mounts sold by spoox Motorsport and it solved the problem but as advised above it might be a good idea to get someone who knows them boxes to give it the once over. A few quid now could save you a bigger repair cost down the road.
