AWESOME RALLY PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE LAUNCHED
www.rallyretro.com

www.rallyretro.com is literally a pictorial step through rallying history, as over 11,000 professional rally images have already been uploaded onto this innovative new website. Started by rally enthusiast Fergus McAnallen, from Dungannon Co. Tyrone the extensive archive actually consists of over 200,000 black and white and colour images, spanning the last forty years of rallying, from International level, to single stage events all over the UK and Ireland. Fergus has had much assistance with the project from his friend Kevin O’ Driscoll of Co. Cork, the pair taking on the task of scanning the thousands of prints, and purchasing the relevant archives. The superb pictures are being made available to the media and private collectors alike.

Images can be easily found on the site, which was designed by Barry Meeke of intramega.com. Searches can be carried out by using the drivers name, event, or year, and you will find drivers such as Ari Vatanen, Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes, Bertie Fisher, Austin McHale, Tony Pond, Henri Toivonen gracing the site. The list is endless! Indeed the list of rallies in possession of the RallyRetro archive includes the Circuit of Ireland- 1964-2005, Donegal 1975 – 2005, Ulster International 1976 – 2005, Cork ’20’ International1978 – 1988, Galway International1977 – 2006, Manx International 1971 – 2004, West Cork Rally 1979 – 2005. Other smaller events from Ireland covered from 1983 to 1987 include: Cavan - Circuit of Kerry - Circuit of Munster - Carlow – Donegal Harvest - Galway Summer - Glenside – Killarney Lakes – Longford - Skibereen – Stonethrowers –Wexford.

The site also contains around 100 major British International rallies from the 1960’s to the 1990’s including the Scottish, Welsh, Mintex, Audi National, National Breakdown and Cartel rallies. With British Nationals, selected European and WRC events, also featured, this has to be one the largest and most valuable motorsport archives in the World. Further developments are also in store later in the year.

Whilst on the site you can also view blog entries, see high resolution sample images, enquire about photos not online or suggest a caption for photos not captioned. There is also a newsletter to keep in touch with the latest site updates. RallyRetro is indebted to the following people: Andrew Bushe, Kieran McAnallen, Colin & Chris Taylor and Adam Cathersides of CTP, Frank Williams of SpeedSports, Richard O'Rourke of Autofocus and Kevin Kiely, all who have either contributed or provided to the archive, and Graham Curry, John Stafford and Robert Ewing for other technical issues.

Brilliant site, you have built up an amazing collection, I'm just wondering when you're going to bring out a book, actually you could do a couple, forget too much blurb in it, just great shots of the drivers who have entertained us over the years:yes:

Thanks for all the nice comments ppl.... but I must say... the site is merely in its infancy...Among the main things yet to come are photos (colour!) from the internationals in the 90's , all of the smaller national events in the 80's, or indeed the Circuit photos from the 60's.

As for the British Championship stuff, God knows when I will ever get near starting to sort that stuff out :o:

Some work went into that, but still its showing off other peoples photos.

Think you got your Maurice and Robert Moffett's mixed up. And your Alan Frazer/ Ian Calvin

Still nice to look through the old snaps, well done for putting the time & effort into it

What ever happened this car of McCartney's?

Thanks for the nice comments, any feedback positive or negative appreciated ...but... so what if they were taken by someone else? And why bring it up twice? You already stated this before but its something most people know. If they don't know they only have to look at the photo and realise I wasn't about in 1971 to take those photos...I also state exactly where the different archives have came from in the press release...so what's the problem? I know I may take praise for the site, and I accept I cannot take praise for the photos .... but without doing what I have done they wouldn't be freely accessable to everyone to view and enjoy...would you rather the site not be there?

Re the captions...Its hard to get them all just perfect...in some cases they have been captioned by people viewing the site (and some by me/Kevin) .. so if I have no entry list to compare it against I can't say for definate whether a certain photo is a certain competitor or not, considering the number of photos and having seen photos of the same car in the same period names are often assumed and linked with certain drivers.

Also, I believe Desi McCartney still owns the 037 Road/Rally Car today. Or so I was told by someone some time ago...I will be doing an interview with him sometime soon so will ask him then.

I keep telling him to do a book.

JJ So what if hes showing off other peoples work the enthusiasm of Gus is something that we will never see again with regard to Retro pics and his collection. He has spent a hell of a lot of his own hard earned money to acheive this and if he can make something back then fair play to him.

If it wasn't for Gus pics like this would of never been seen again and we wouldn't have the pleasure of seeing such rare photos

Last time I saw the car it was in McCartney Motors showroom in Ballymena. Imagine it's in the current showroom in Larne.
BTW, it's only a Lancia Montecarlo tricked up to look like an 037, but an interesting car all the same.

Hi Gus,
brilliant site.We spoke about this at the West Cork Rally but it is only when you see the collection you realise the amount of time and energy put into 1:collecting and collating the stuff, and 2: putting it all up on a website.
You have given us many hours of future pleasure when things are slack.
Well done,brilliant stuff! :yahoo:

Oh,and f eck the begrudgers, they'll be moaning about something else tomorrow. :whip:
Remember the old saying Gus,"When they're talking about me,they're leaving someone else alone!"

Think Dessie sold the car but made moulds of the body work so he could convert any Lancia Montecarlo to 037 spec. Also has full set of 6r4 moulds, when he bought 2 containers full of stuff from Austin Rover when they sold off all the Metros when Group B was binned. Hard to think that was 20 years ago :surrender::surrender:
