What are the best tarmac tyres you can buy.
I see alot buying Kumho's, I here they are good in the wet but not as good as the michelins in the dry.

I use michelins myself but they are a bit pricey:P

Kumhos give great grip and are very easy to heat but there is not a massive amount of milage with them.

I use dunlops and the grip is pretty good but it is hard to get the heat into them and they dont really start to work until a few miles in but i find there is very good mileage with them. You are talking at least €300 a pair for them (thats after pleading for ages on how you can hardly afford to go rallying)

Its a case of weighing it up... Kumhos: Great grip, not so good mileage
Dunlops: Good drip, good mileage.
Michelins??

Dunlop mate, the only way to go.......
Nigel Green is good to deal with too and always willing to give info and advice if ur not sure about what compound to use.......
Kumho supposed to be good too but have never used them and would find it hard to move away from Dunlop anyway......

Michelin....Nah!!!!

i used dunlops for years and would not have confidence on anything else, also dunlop give great support and advice so its hard to beat that, pirelli dont always have 14" or 15" tyres at rallies at least they had no 15" in west cork anyway!!!

revoultion are not great ross the dont have the clearence for the big calipers go speed line or compomotive bill adair used to be the best man to buy rims off
as for tyres dunlop are very good and nigel and jenny are really helpful the dont care if you have a wrc or a micra the will look after you.

matador are a good cheaper tyre the would be fairly soft not much life in them compaired to dunlops but the are worth a look all the same

i wont mention kumho as last time i did i was told to watch it by a person representing kumho in ireland :headache:

dont know much about pirelli the dont seem to be intrested in the smaller cars and are a bit expensive

michelin seem to be the best i have used them but not enuff to comment also the are fairly expensive look at the msport tyres site.

go for dunlop you wont regret it

anyone used MaxSport tyres ? any good? what about Colway tyres ?

fatboymotorsport
26-04-2006, 05:39
two words for you one is ****** and the other is shi!e the are not worth tinking about unless maybe the forestry ones but as for tarmac the are a joke i had some colways that were susposed to be soft couldnt heat them for love nor money and that was on a 205
you would be better off on road tyres

if you are struggling to find tyres cheap consider road tyres when we built our first 205 we ran on road tyres now that was 10 years ago but still it did the job and the were'nt great road tyres either.

look into any of the lads doing the one make championships as the only do one or two stages on a tyre i used to buy tyres off gary jennings and rory galligan the were the best of tyres and only did 2 stages max as the used new tyres all the time

Colways are a good steering tyre in the woods but are still only a remould.......

whats the range like what compounds are available and do you carry them in stock and most important whats the price like ???? all the fia sizes are there (gravel) 13s,14s,15s all in stock and all with good results 13s with lloyd huchinson,14s with conor Kelly and the 15s (185)with paul barrett and the (195s) are fantastic winning all over the world now with alister mcrea on them too ,The tarmac sizes are 13s,14s,15s,16s,17s,and 18s all in stock and the price so far is around 15% cheaper than anything out there at the moment phil collins uses them on his mk2 in 16 and 17 inch and now terence o shaughnessy is using them on his carolla! so have a look at his times on the last few stages in carlow at the weekend when he got a clean run!! savage times in a 1600! So give them a try!! THEY WONT SLOW ANY ONE DOWN! Thats for sure!

- Michelin
- BF Goodrich
- Pirelli (new models)

Tyres are purely a personal choice and what confidence you have in them, wether it is listening to somebody saying they are a great tyre, or trying them out for yourself which ever gives you the confidence??

I have tried Dunlop, kumho and even the matadors for sligo last year, couldn't warm the matadors???.
Me personally think Dunlops are best if you get the cuts and compound right for the conditions.
Rememeber for every tyre there are numerous compounds and it may not be that the tyres are sh!t it may be that your compounds are wrong

just my 5 pence worth.

How would you rate these tyres (I mean GRAVEL ones) I mentioned before if the price doesn't matter? I have been using some old Michelin's (they were great but got worn) and Silverstone (NOT - no grip).

What do you think about new Pirelli? It didn't look enough reliable for me a year ago, but now when they're in WRC maybe they tighten their pants?

As I understood Kumho heat's up good and grip well, but wears very quickly?

p.s. Impossible to buy Dunlop here. You all guys talking about SP85 model of Dunlops?

p.p.s. VAT - Value Added Tax.

colways are fine for sprints etc
matador the same
i have used both and they are useless on proper tarmac stages, they go off after a few miles
a quick car is no good without grip !!!!!!!!!!!!
