Is it possible to shorten the shift distance between gears on a 205 gti ? how do you go about it? big job ?

the linkage is simple enuff its a must do as the cup and ball job that comes standard is **** on my 205 we used small rose joints to replace the cups sorry i cant really remember how we did it was years ago.
