He collected a puncture as he crossed the cattle grid. That clip is reputed to be the first ever in car footage-look what it started.

Some of McNulty's incar from Galway last nyt was well scary, he was on the limit, no wonder he put it off!

In the late-80's, the BBC Grandstand held a rally competition at the end of the season. Ford, lancia et al would provide a car and the likes of Lovell, Fiorio and Arrikkala would drive. Each 'episode' was a single stage using a single car for all drivers. One such episode was using RS Cosworths on the Isle of Man. The stage was pretty straightforward, with a downhill section into one of them cattlegrids and up a hill on the other side. There wa suggestions that this driver or that was going to do it flat. In the end, only one driver had the cojones to do it - Mark Lovell. It was incredible. If memory serves, he lost one - if not both - wing mirrors in the process. it took guys like him who'd driven 800BHP Gp. B cars...

RIP Mark & Roger.

There were cameras everywhere, including in-car, because it was a made-for-tv thingy. Steve Rider of the BBC is a huge rally fan and it was all his doing.
