Hard to beat a WRC on the hairpins though. Would love to see one of them go up Molls Gap or Knockalla.

Awesome car, but surely JJ even you must be able to see that it struggles a little on tighter hairpins? Would love to see a WRC car unrestricted and tuned on as this S4 has been

Nice clip. Illustrates that you don't have to be throwing the @r$e of a car around to see exciting Tarmac footage. He was on the absolute limit there in places.

By the sounds of it, both the engine and gearbox have been "tweaked" from '85/'86 spec.

Imagine Nesbitt in one of them yokes :-)

and what year were they?? Lancia Delta WRC? Celica WRC?? I don't think so. Modern stuff isn't the same.

Some impressive clips on the video mind you, but from how long ago? the way technology is now, we just dont see that anymore

the group S version they were planning was even hairier than this all carbon composites and nearly 1000 bhp!:P:P:P
No wonder they banned them.

Yeah, even the wheels were carbon, I remember. It was done in the red & black Martini paintjob. Sinister-looking beast. Lucky for Alen et al they couldn't keep it - Lancia were on for a hat-trick of killing drivers...

Yeah also Audi had a 800bhp engine for the s2 quattro before they were banned but wouldnt i be right in saying that wrc cars are as fast ?? I think there were banned more for the saftey as Id rather be in a wrc scobby crashin at 100 mph that a carbon eggshell lancia ??What you think

I believe Group S cars were to be limited to 300 horsepower

Ya i thought that too. Grp S was gng to keep the whole space frame chassis prototype idea of group b but limit the power and in the end they chose Grp A over it. Anyone else out there know any more?

Group S

Group S was the class planned to replace the Group B cars. FISA was planning Group S because they wanted a class to allow manufacturers to develop futuristic, prototype cars. The homologation requirement for Group S was only ten cars, but the cars were limited to 300 horsepower. Oddly, these rules are very similar to today's WRC class, which has a maximum of 300 horsepower and requires 20 copies.

Group S never got off the ground, though. When Henri Toivonen died, FISA hastily cancelled plans for Group S, leaving the interested manufacturers stuck with prototypes that could never be driven. The Group A cars became the flagship cars for the manufacturers left in rallying following the death of Group B. The cancellation of Group S wasn't really necessary, since the cars were restricted to 300 horsepower, but FISA cancelled it anyways.

Not much is known about Group S because Group S never got the chance to compete in the World Rally Championship. The class would have been very interesting to watch because it was aimed towards futuristic cars. Some of the prototypes being developed looked very interesting. Lancia's prototype, called the ECV, looked like the S4 except it was red and it was smaller. Audi announced that they were planning a Group S car called the 002 Quattro. Ford also stated that the RS200 was to be developed into a Group S competitor. Group S would have been an interesting class to watch as it developed.

The 288GTO was the prototype for the famous F40 of 1987. I believe a certain Edmund Irvine has one of the 5.

MSD's first project was an Astra Gp.S for GM.
